Our daughter, Lauren, loves to share her love of the miniature breed with others and in 2005 came up with an idea to have others come out after school to learn about them. Some have actually worked with the show horses and participated in shows and we have had some fun shows to practice some Thursday afternoons. Participants range from elementary school through high school seniors. Those who want can sign up for community service hours through the high school Leo Club and participation sometimes has as many as twenty. Grooming, working with the weanlings, training, cleaning stalls, clipping, working with the new guard dog puppies are just some of the activities that Thursday Kids enjoy.
Leo Club also passed out fliers to the neighborhood when we had a series of dog attacks on our herd. A great thank you goes to Mrs. Espinoza. for her efforts in coordinating that effort.
Kids of all ages who love horses can have a great time and learn more about horses: We request that any child under age ten have a parent accompany them for the session:

Update: 2009 Hays' County Youth Horse Show
We took five Thursday Kids, nine horses and came home with nine Top Tens showing against mostly big horses. Four of our participants were showing for the first time! Hats off to Lauren, who couldn't come to the show because she is in Washington, D.C., beginning an internship through A&M. Four of the five that she trained for showmanship placed in the Top Ten out of twenty-one entries, one placing third.
Here are some fun "before and after" shots:
